GRIEG FESTIVAL CONFERENCE
January 9-11, 2009

The mission of the Grieg Festival is to enhance Edvard Grieg's reputation by acquainting American musicians and audiences with high-quality performances, stimulating lectures, and exhibits that focus on Grieg's significant but rarely-heard works.

Grieg is well-known for a few of his major compositions but numerous works of equally high quality are seldom studied by young artists or heard in public concerts in the United States. The Grieg Festival seeks to broaden the perception of Grieg's music with performances and presentations of significant but lesser-known works.  Noted Norwegian and American Grieg specialists will meet for in-depth explorations and discussions of topics related to many of his best works.  Members of the International Grieg Society from Bergen Norway will participate in lectures and bring an exhibit of copies of Grieg documents from the Bergen Public Library.  Norwegian and American artists will perform, conduct master classes and serve on a panel of judges for a young artists competition.  Prizes for the young artists competition include several cash awards, a CD recording for radio broadcasts, and the grand prize of a concert tour in Norway.  Cash prizes will also be awarded for outstanding performances in the master classes.

Call for Papers
The Grieg Festival welcomes musicians and scholars with an interest in Edvard Grieg's music to submit proposals for presentation at the conference. Proposals should focus on topics dealing with compositions that are not often heard but that deserve recognition. A 500-word abstract must be sent electronically as a Rich Text or Word (2003) attachment by September 1, 2008 to Dr. Sylvia R. Eckes at eckess@ohio.edu. Contact information such as name, address, phone number, e-mail, and professional title and/or institutional affiliation must be included with the proposal. Student papers are also welcome. Papers will be reviewed by members of the festival committee and notification of acceptance will be no later than September 15, 2008.

Performances
There will be performances throughout the three-day festival. Special public performances include a Saturday evening concert featuring concert artists from Norway and America, a Sunday morning performance with local and guest artists, and a Sunday afternoon performance featuring the finalists of the Young Artists Competition.

Master Classes
Piano, voice, and string players will be invited to participate in master classes conducted by concert artists. Performances include both solo and chamber works by Grieg. Cash prizes will be awarded for outstanding performances. Participants will be invited by members of the festival committee by September 15, 2008. The fee for participation, $25.00 for individual or group performers, is due by October 1, 2008.

Exhibits
A special exhibit of copies of Grieg songs and other compositions from the Bergen Public Library in Bergen Norway will be on display in the Olin Library on the Rollins College campus.  This exhibit is made possible by the International Grieg Society in Bergen Norway.

Receptions
There will be refreshments in a lounge area for attendees of the conference during conference hours on Friday and Saturday.   There will also be a reception after the Saturday evening performance.
